Background
The packaging industry in Sri Lanka is a vital component of the country's manufacturing sector, playing a crucial role in safeguarding and promoting the quality of diverse products. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, Sri Lanka's packaging industry has evolved to meet global standards. The sector encompasses a wide range of materials and products, including corrugated board, Paper and paper board cartons, Paper and Plastic Flexible bags, Rigid plastics, glass, and metal containers. Sri Lankan packaging manufacturers are known for their adaptability, incorporating advanced technologies to produce high-quality and eco-friendly packaging solutions. The industry not only caters to the domestic market but also actively engages in exports, contributing significantly to the country's overall trade. Sri Lanka's packaging sector is poised for growth, driven by a commitment to environmental consciousness, adherence to international quality standards, and a dynamic approach to meeting the diverse packaging needs of various industries.
The packaging industry in Sri Lanka stands as a cornerstone of the country's export portfolio, playing a pivotal role in contributing to the national economy.
This industry clearly has a significant potential for being a key contributor to the economy of the country, if it is empowered by appropriate support and guidance. Inferior quality of packaging is one of the major barriers to promote Sri Lankan products in the international market. Since Sri Lanka’s major exports are to EU, it is essential to develop the quality of our products in order to sustain and increase exports. The main reason for this is the lack of knowledge of the Sri Lankan manufacturers on packaging materials and its barrier properties and functions.
